Health is part of our daily lives. There is even a day to celebrate it and raise awareness around the issues it can arise. Did you know that?

World Health Day 2022 took place on the 7th of April. Nonetheless, its importance should be carried around throughout the year. The date was first celebrated in 1950. And, it has since then helped bring forward issues of concern in the healthcare industry.

2021 marked the year for building a ‘healthier and fairer world’. This year, it is all about universal health coverage. So, we are going to share with you all you need to know about it.

What is World Health Day?

World Health Day is an important celebration that has set the tone for a global agenda on healthcare. But before talking about it, it is important to understand where it originated.

World Health Organization (WHO) was created in 1948 under a constitution and agreement signed by over 60 countries. One of the first initiatives carried out by it was the creation of a World Health Day. Firstly celebrated in July 1949, which was then changed to April 7th.

The intention was to create a day to raise awareness around determined key topics. Fostering in governments and private companies the willingness to work towards imposed goals. Improving, in that way, universal healthcare.

In sum, every year a theme is proposed by government members and staff, and selected by the WHO Director-General in office. From there, governments and organizations are given the opportunity to work on important issues that affect international communities.

Curiosity… WHO defines health as, “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.

2022: The year for Universal Health Coverage

The pandemic has had a great impact on the global society, namely Europe. As a result, it has uncovered rooted problems in the health system that governments and companies must reflect upon and solve.

This year World Health Day will focus on Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Defining it as the access to health services by all individuals and communities “without suffering economic hardship” (WHO).

What is being done?

So as to provide universal access to health, the WHO has forged alliances and partnerships with different organizations. Some of these include:
